The purpose of the school is to provide a high standard of education under Christian leadership, for children of all communities irrespective of caste, creed or religion.
The school shall, at the discretion of the management endeavour to give education to those children whose parents cannot afford to send them to school.
Our
Story
The story of St. Thomas is how one woman’s vision for good quality education in neglected areas of North Madras began with two students on the verandah of their home on Tondiarpet, has now completed more than five decades of fulfilling the vision. St. Thomas Matric Hr Sec School was founded by Late Mr. C.M.Mathews & Late Mrs. Ponnamma Mathews. With a deep urge to serve the community, they chose North Madras when it was a neglected and backward area with regard to education. In 1965, their dream turned into reality when the first school Model School was inaugurated as a small Nursery School in Tondiarpet, Madras. The need for quality good education prompted them to start another school in Sathumanagar, which was the beginning of St. Thomas School. From two students then to 1000 students today, the school is a full fledged Higher Secondary School with 50 staff members and equipped with labs, library, smart classes, mini stadium, airconditioned classrooms, Athletic Track, Volley Ball and Basket Ball courts. The Founders, Mr.C.M.Mathews, who was the Controller of Finance at MRF & his wife Mrs. Ponnamma Mathews a teacher trained in London under Mario Montessori, had returned to India in 1960 with a deep urge to serve the community. The dream to start a nursery school imparting a Montessori System of education was catalysed in 1957 – 1960 when Mrs. Mathews was in London undergoing Montessori training. When they returned to India, they tried to identify a place to start their dream school. At that time, South India was starved for private institutions and North Madras was a neglected and backward area with regard to education. In 1965, their dream turned into reality when Model School was inaugurated as a small Nursery School in Tondiarpet, Madras. The demand for admission in Model School was so great that by 1968, a branch school was opened in Thiruvottiyur, an industrial suburb of Madras. This was the birth of St. Thomas Nursery School. The school was at Sathumanagar,(formerly known as 'Sathan Kaadu') , where English medium education was a far cry for the people. This school, with a thatched shed and two teachers had no students for the first few months. Anyone would have abandoned the idea of the school, but it did not deter her. Mrs. Mathews waited patiently till a handful of tiny tots were admitted and the rest is history. Over the years, with tremendous support from parents and well-wishers, the school grew step by step into a Primary, Middle, High School & finally to its present status as St. Thomas Matriculation Higher Secondary School. Today, this school is a full fledged Higher Secondary School & is recognized by the Department of Education, Government of Tamil Nadu, having classes from Play Class to 12th standard. It has a student-strength of 1000, and over 50 staff members. The school is situated in a sprawling 3 acre plot of land and has a built-up area of 18000 sq. ft. Fully equipped labs, library, smart classes, mini stadium, airconditioned classrooms, Athletic Track, Volley Ball and Basket Ball courts are the other facilities the school offers to the students. Barring a couple of years, the school is maintaining 100 percent pass results for X and XII standards. Since its founding, St.Thomas has been motivated and engaged with its core mission of the discovery and dissemination of knowledge for the benefit of the society.

The candle's flame represents "being the light" in the world, inspiring students to use their education and skills and illuminating their path to wisdom and understanding. Centred by the cross, this symbolizes the importance of Christian faith and values in the school's mission. It represents the commitment to spiritual growth, moral values, and the development of character.
